Technologies Which Make The Galaxy S9 Camera Standout

Feb 27, 2018 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

When it comes to innovation, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus haven’t really brought anything new to the table. What Samsung did instead is that it improved the existing features that are most frequently used by consumers. This is what the users requested, Samsung says. One of the things that Samsung has greatly improved is the Galaxy S9 camera. The camera has a variable aperture with two selectable values: f / 1.5 and f / 2.4. In fact, the camera is such an important part of the S9 series that Samsung used the phrase “The Camera Re-imagined”. Galaxy S9 has only one 12MP camera with variable aperture, and Galaxy S9 Plus has a dual camera setup with the same 12MP resolution. The standard sensor is with variable aperture and the second one with f / 2.4. Back cameras are optically stabilized in both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, and the front camera has 8MP resolution with aperture f / 1.7. So, how good is the Galaxy S9 camera and what makes it stand out? Let’s find out in the Galaxy S9 camera review!

Multi-Frame Noise Reduction

Both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus support multi-frame noise reduction technologies. 12 images will be shot, in 3 groups of 4, and will then be amalgamated into a single shot for the best clarity and minimum noise.

Dual Pixel 12MP Sensor With Dual Aperture

Samsung has used its 12MP ISOCELL image sensor in the Galaxy S9 series. It is one of the best sensors around and has the super speed dual pixel phase detection autofocus for great performance. Samsung has also included great optics and has used a dual aperture lens with f1.5 and f2.4 aperture and optical image stabilization. Although we have seen apertures getting larger to help with the issue of low light responsiveness, this doesn’t necessarily help increase clarity. Samsung says:“Similar to the way the iris of a human eye expands and contracts, Samsung’s Dual Aperture (F1.5 – F2.4) automatically lets in more light when it’s dark and less light when it’s too bright, taking photos that are crisp and clear anytime, anywhere.”

Dual Rear Cameras (Galaxy S9 Plus)

The Galaxy S9 Plus will have an additional telephoto sensor and also a lens with an f2.4 aperture which will enable wide angle shots. This will also enable portrait mode bokeh effects. Both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will have an 8MP front camera.

Super Slow-Mo Mode

This mode captures video at 960 frames per second in 6-second clips. It captures .2 seconds of real-time video and slows it down to a 6-second burst at 960 FPS.

Bixby Real-Time Translation

If in the Bixby mode, you post the Galaxy S9 camera at a foreign text, like a street sign, Bixby will do a real-time translation for you.

If you are wondering what an aperture is, it is the size of camera’s opening via which light enters the camera and goes to the sensors. It is measured in f-stops, which a ratio of focal length divided by the size of the opening. The smaller the f-stop is, the wider the opening. This allows more light to enter the Galaxy S9. Galaxy S9 camera will switch between two different sized openings.

Samsung Galaxy S8 camera was a benchmark and it is not to easy to raise the bar, but Samsung has increased the maximum aperture to f / 1.5, slow-motion up to 960fps, and video recording in 4K and 60fps. The picture quality seems to be at the top.

The most important thing to be analyzed is the difference in the pictures taken with opening af / 1.5 and f / 2.4.  The photos with af / 1.5 have a more pronounced bokeh, while shots with f / 2.4 have a higher definition, even if they aren’t as bright.

When using the “pro mode” you can select between the two openings. Selecting f / 2.4 means the captured light decreases, and to balance it you can increase the ISO or reduce the time shutter to rely on the bokeh and the different definition. On the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, the second sensor can be used to get a 2x optical zoom at the same resolution or to make use of digital bokeh effects in portraits.
