Surface Book 2 was expected to be released this year, but it looks like fans might have to wait till next year to upgrade their current Surface Book.
According to a supply chain, there are some design issues with the upcoming Surface Book 2 which led to the production halt of the upcoming notebook. The upcoming laptop will definitely feature several things that are going to be better than its predecessor, so it looks like the design team probably ran into a brick wall on how to implement those features properly on a laptop.
Even if Surface Book 2 does manage to be released next year, it might still come running with Intel’s 7th generation Kaby Lake processors. Since Intel has decided to stop focusing on placing millions of transistors inside its chip with every new series of CPUs, the Kaby Lake series of processors are going to remain manufactured on the 14nm technology. However, with the improved architecture, and possibly higher clock speed and improved iGPU performance embedded in the processors, these chips will obviously be able to surpass the performance and efficiency of Intel’s Skylake lineup.
Microsoft could be looking to kick it up a notch by installing a 4K display onto Surface Book 2. The original Surface Book came with a 3000 x 2000 resolution, so it is quite likely that the upcoming notebook will have a higher resolution than this. Since Surface Book 2 has been reported to be delayed, the notebook family will not be able to take on the 2016 MacBook Pro product lineup, which is expected to released next month.
Another addition to the feature side of Surface Book 2 will be the introduction of a USB-C port. The advantages of having a USB-C port installed on a machine will include higher data transfer speeds, more power delivery and of course the ability to hook up a secondary display thanks to this miniature port. While pricing details are currently in limbo, Surface Book 2 will undoubtedly be coming in several different specification flavors and with different pricing structures, but we hope that the starting price tag is less than the $1,499 that came with the original Surface Book.
With the imminent release of Surface Book 2, the prices of Surface Book will continue to fall, allowing the notebook to come even more affordable than before.
