During the MWC 2017, Sony had surprised everyone by presenting a photo pack that can record short video clips at 960 fps, something impressive since professional tools with such capabilities cost thousands of Euros. Well, finally, the smartphone that incorporates this technology has been launched. It’s a top-of-the-line phone with everything. Sony Xperia XZ premium might just be one of the best Android phones in this price range!
Sony Xperia XZ Premium
Sony Xperia XZ Premium is an impressive smartphone: it incorporates the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 2017 top CPU, accompanied by the Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB of lpDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal UFS 2.1 expandable microSD memory. Among the sensors equipped we find the accelerometer, gyro, magnetometer, barometer, brightness sensor, proximity sensor and a color spectrum sensor. On the right-hand side of the phone, there is a quick release button, volume bar, and a power button, with a fast and accurate fingerprint sensor integrated. As far as the position of the fingerprint reader is concerned, don’t worry as it is fully functional especially for the right-handers, while the left-hand side is slightly more uncomfortable by having to support the index or the middle instead of the thumb, but in this case there is no insurmountable problem, It’s just a matter of habit. A very visible notification LED is present, while there is no infrared port. Sony Xperia XZ premium offers complete connectivity. Data exchange can take place in LTE Cat. 17. There is also WiFi ac and Bluetooth in version 5. There is also GPS and NFC, but the FM radio is absent.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium is pretty good but it does not stand out from the other top of the range phones. The call quality is clear, while only one speaker is used in hands-free mode, so the volume is not very high.

When it comes to performance, the technical card leaves no room for doubt and field testing merely confirms the expectations, this smartphone is extremely quick and easy in every use situation. When you use the camera heavily and for a long time, as with long-lasting streaming on the social media, there is a marked overheating. According to our review source, on one occasion the device was completely blocked for several minutes and a message appeared on the screen that reported the inability to continue using the cam. In fact, overheating is not a problem with Sony Xperia XZ Premium, unless you are using the camera for a very long time, otherwise, there will be a bit of warmth that ultimately can be found on all smartphones with some hardware during the summer days.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is built with two Gorilla Glass 5 glass faces, two plastic sides and the upper and lower ends of aluminum with a milling on the edge. It is elegant, sober, and exaggeratedly great. The edges are sharp, something Sony is known for, and now a style icon in the Android landscape. The elegance and care in the making are impressive (it’s also IP68 certified). The end device is minimal and elegant. There are two frames above and below the really huge and anachronistic display that bring the overall size to the 156 x 77 x 7.9 mm for a weight of even 195 grams. Although the phone isn’t too slippery, the ergonomics could have been better.

The display is fabulous. It is an IPS HDR LCD panel with 4K resolution, which is both technically and effectively the best LCD on the market at present. It is very beautiful to see, bright and well visible in the sunlight. It loses a bit in the depths of blacks but overall quality is really amazing. About 4K (the density has a record value above 800 ppi) you should know that it is not normally exploited in the system interface but only activates in proprietary media apps or while viewing videos that support the resolution. There is a multimedia subframe entrusted to two front stereo speakers with good quality but the volume is not that impressive. The sound quality is good but during times of need, you might miss the bell.

The camera with which the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is equipped is the true ace up the sleeve: this is a 19 mega pixel Sony IMX400 sensor, with 5-axis stabilized F / 2.0 optics, color spectrum sensor, laser focus, single flash LEDs, but above all it has the impressive ability to produce slow motion video clips at 960 fps. The front camera has 13 megapixels and autofocus. The photos are fine. You can get detailed photos during day and night both and most of the shots are definitely convincing under each parameter. Unfortunately, once again, this is a smartphone with incredible potential but no software processing at all. The selfies are in line with the Galaxy S8. The videos are great, 5-axis optical zoom in FullHD at 60 fps is a not-for-all plus for those who like to shoot video clips with the smartphone.

The 3230 mAh battery allows you to get adequate autonomy, you can get to the end of the day without too much trouble with at least 20% of residual charge on the most stressful days. If you use the phone normally, you can reach 5h of lit display on a day and a half of use, which may vary slightly depending on your style of use.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium is already upgraded to Android 7.1.1 Nougat with security patches in June 2017.Sony’s interface, for a few years now, has become very simple and similar to Android stocks. This approach has some advantages like rapid updates and overall system speed, but it also has some gaps, especially at the functionality level and preinstalled applications. Key features include multimedia connectivity to other smart devices such as TVs and infotainment systems.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is priced at 769 €. Surely Sony Xperia XZ Premium fits among the best 2017 smartphones, incorporating a complete technical card and spectacular slow motion performance. It has no particular faults except a slight tendency to overheat, only partially justified by the hot summer days.
