The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was released by Samsung two and a half months ago. Only now the Korean smartphone maker rolls out the first software update for the flagship. Curious as to what this all entails?Then read on.
Galaxy Note 8 Update
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is the latest flagship of Samsung. Just like its predecessors, it is equipped with a colossal screen – which is no less than 6.3 inches in diameter – and has a digital pen or stylus. As you can see, it is not the average phone. The price tag is not usual: you have to cough up 999 euros for the flagship. Or you have to take a pricey calling and data plan.

If you put so much on a mobile phone, you can assume that Samsung does everything it can to ensure that it is up-to-date and securely secured. Yet it took two months for Sammy to roll out the first software update. We sincerely hope that Samsung will not let its customers wait so long in the future.

The update has the name N950FXXU1BQK6 and is no less than 840 MB in size. The update doesn’t bring Android 8.0 Oreo. But of course, the patch does contain other elements. To begin with, you get the latest Android security level: November 2017. This protects your phone against the latest and potentially dangerous security flaws in the operating system, including the recently discovered WiFi leak KRACK. Because of this vulnerability, malicious parties can relatively easily ‘look over your shoulder’ and collect all your private data, such as the websites you visit, as well as the passwords you enter.

Samsung also says that it has implemented improvements for various apps, including Calendar, Gallery, Reminder and Voice Recorder. If you install the above-mentioned update, they should run even smoother. Finally, Samsung introduces one new feature: Secure WiFi. All data that you retrieve or send with this is automatically encrypted when you enable this function.

Unfortunately no Android 8.0 Oreo with all kinds of new, cool features such as picture-in-picture mode, Smart Text Selection, Notification Channels and various optimizations that will get you even more out of your battery. This Android version is currently being developed and tested by Samsung. The Korean smartphone maker is expected to roll it out just before the end of the year, or else early next year.

Given the size of the installation package, it is wise that you are connected to a WiFi network to prevent an unexpectedly high telephone bill. In addition, it is smart that you back up all your most important files before you download the update. Lastly, make sure your device is sufficiently charged or hanging on the charger. After all, you do not want it to drop out suddenly in the middle of the update process. You will automatically receive a notification when the software update is ready for you. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has as mentioned a 6.3 inch AMOLED display with 18: 9 aspect ratio and a resolution of up to 2960 by 1440 pixels (you can adjust the screen resolution up and down to extend the battery life). The giant screen has been renamed the Infinity Display by the Koreans. There is a 2.3 GHz powerful octa-core processor: the Exynos 8895. This is supplemented with the ARM Mali-G71 GPU and 6 GB of RAM. The standard storage capacity is 64 GB, but you can expand to 256 GB with a microSD card.

On the back, Samsung has installed two 12 megapixel cameras with optical image stabilization. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel camera, which also serves as an iris scanner. The facial recognition software also uses the front-facing camera. The fingerprint scanner is on the back. Furthermore, the flagship has the usual bells and whistles that you can expect from a high-end flagship: Bluetooth 5, USB-C and NFC. Finally, it is dust and waterproof (IP68 certified) and you get a stylus: the S Pen.
