Chinese smartphone supplier Huawei is not using the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2018 to present new top smartphones like the Huawei P20.Instead, Huawei will launch the Huawei MediaPad M5 10 (Pro) and the Huawei Media Pad M5 8, two new, stylishly tablets that compete with the Apple iPads.

While we still have no information about the MediaPad M5 8, the big sister model Huawei MediaPad M5 10 has already hit the road. Officially, the new devices will be on display at the MWC, but the first official product images already give a first glimpse. The technical data indicates that the MediaPad M5 series is one of the most powerful Android tablets.

The Huawei MediaPad M5 10 will come with a 10.8-inch LCD panel, which works with 2560×1600 pixels and thus provide an unusual, but somewhat stretched format, but ensures that there is more space for the content to be displayed. Although the device does not have the 3: 2 format, but Huawei can boast of surpassing the Apple iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch format in terms of resolution.

Inside the device is the Huawei P10 and Mate 9’s well-known HiSilicon Kirin 960 Octa-core SoC, which features four 1.84 gigahertz ARM Cortex-A53 cores, as well as four powerful ARM Cortex-A73 cores which reach up to 2.4 gigahertz. The memory is independent of the model four gigabytes in size, while the basic version of the MediaPad M5 10 always comes along with 32 GB of internal flash memory.

However, Huawei also wants to offer a “pro” version, which, in addition to the LTE support, which is at least optionally available in the normal version, also supports a stylus marketed again as an M-Pen, and which also has 64 gigabytes of internal flash memory. The internal memory can basically be expanded by means of MicroSD card.

For the cameras, Huawei sets an untypical focus for tablets but makes it clear that it wants to offer an alternative to the Apple tablets in this regard. The camera on the back offers a 13-megapixel sensor that curiously has an autofocus, but no LED flash. On the front, however, sits an 8-megapixel camera with a fixed focus, but should be ideally suited for video calls.

In any case, the complete package is housed in a unibody case milled out of a single piece of aluminum, which is traversed by some cut-outs for use as antennas. Noticeable are the holes at the top, which should serve as an outlet for Harman-Kardon tuned speakers. On the front, it is noticeable that Huawei has now transplanted the fingerprint reader to the right edge of the rather narrow display frame. This is likely to make the unlock mechanism of MediaPad M5 10 again extremely reliable and fast, as is the case with the other high-end devices with Android from Huawei.

The battery of the only seven millimeters thin and 499-gram Huawei MediaPad M5 10 is with almost 29 watt-hours, although not quite as big as in the competition from Apple, but should still be able to provide for some enormous runtimes. The only downer in the actually promising spec sheet of the new Huawei tablet is the fact that it still seems to be using Android 7.0 “nougat”.

In terms of price, the new MediaPad M5 models with the 10.8-inch display will probably start at 399 euros, while the LTE-capable version could start for 449 euros. Exact details are not yet available. For the Huawei MediaPad M5 10 Pro with stylus support, LTE and 64 GB doubled internal memory the price will probably be just under 500 euros due. Huawei’s new tablets will be introduced within the next few weeks, with availability likely to be directly linked to the launch event on Sunday, February 25th.

Incidentally, Huawei also wants to market its new premium tablet with a 10-inch screen as a workhorse. Therefore, the manufacturer offers not only normal cases for it but in addition to the stylus even a keyboard cover with fold-out stand. Thus the user should be able to handle Microsoft office apps for Android problem-free and thereby be able to set up the tablet at any angle of up to 160 degrees.
