At the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, numerous manufacturers showed new trends and products. On Sunday, Samsung took the center stage. The Koreans introduced the new Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. But also many other manufacturers brought something new. Sony showed the XZ2 (Compact), and Nokia brought the “cult banana”, the 8810, a retro telephone into the play. But new technologies such as the new 5G radio standard were also discovered at the fair.

With the Galaxy S9, Samsung introduced its first flagship model of the year, leaving much unchanged at first glance compared to its predecessor. Listening to the complaint made regarding Galaxy S8 last year, Samsung has repositioned the fingerprint sensor on Galaxy S9. The S9 also has an Intelligent Scan system for unlocking the phone. There was also a lot going on next to the fair. For example, DJ Koh, head of the Samsung mobile division, said that they are considering whether to change the brand name of the Galaxy S, so the next flagship might not be called Samsung Galaxy S10 anymore.

HMD Global will reissue the Nokia 8810 based on the design of the two-decade-old original, but with the latest technology. The feature phone was shown for the first time at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. While European customers had to do without the Nokia 7 so far, the Finnish developers of HMD Global are now officially launching the device in a new Plus version here in Europe as well.

The Japanese electronics giant Sony has been in the field of smartphones for a long time and seems resistant to change in some ways. This is also because Sony has long insisted on its own design. But this year you finally gave up the too stubborn attitude and presented with the Xperia XZ2 a device that can be described as more contemporary in many ways. Sony also unveiled a new compact model from its Xperia XZ2 series at the Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC) in Barcelona. This is similarly well equipped as the flagship, just designed smaller.

The smartphones from Caterpillar are often called craftsman’s smartphone. Although this is primarily marketing, this description is quite justified because the smartphones hold out a lot. With the Cat S61, the manufacturer now proves that an outdoor or so-called “Rugged” smartphone can also offer a lot of technology. Deutsche Telekom is the only company who will support the new eSim for now. Among other things, they presented at the fair the e-bike G6, which has various sensors that can be evaluated via the mobile connection directly in the cloud and the driver to present navigation tips on a built-in monitor. Videos taken while driving can also be uploaded directly to other users via the eSim to share the experiences.

The telecommunications specialists from Huawei showed, among other things, new offshoots of the Mediapad family. The new Huawei MediaPad M5 8 is an 8.4-inch device that performs well when compared to competitors such as the iPad mini. In addition, Huawei has introduced the MateBook X Pro at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, a particularly powerful notebook, which ensures its FullView display for extremely sharp images. The other technical data are impressive.

In fact, most manufacturers at the Mobile World Congress 2018 focused on introducing smartphones and tablets. Lenovo is also used the Barcelona mobile show to highlight new notebook models. For instance, the new Lenovo Yoga 530 , which will only be available in a 14-inch version. Lenovo also used the event to showcase a series of very special notebooks. TheseChromebooks do not shine with their features, but with their workmanship. Diverse features should ensure that the computers also survive easily in one of the most deadly environments for electronics, for instance in the classrooms of younger users.

Not only pure hardware was on show at the MWC. Even techniques such as the new 5G radio standard could already be found as a prototype. Almost at each booth, 5G appeared somehow, even if it mostly stayed in simple graphics form. Intel, on the other hand, has introduced its own 2-in-1 hybrid PC with a 5G-capable modem in order to demonstrate its everyday use. Also, Windows on ARM CPUs was an issue. We will see new notebook hardware based on the Snapdragon 845 this year, and 64-bit applications will also follow Windows-on-ARM during the year.
