Is Samsung Galaxy S6 the saviour Samsung’s waiting for?

Samsung S6 ain’t gonna change anything for Korean Giants

There was a time when there was a fear that Apple might lose their market share to Samsung. How the mighty have fallen. After the horrendous performance of S5 can S6 do them any good?
It doesn’t seem to sound true when you consider the odds.

Regional losses

Samsung led because it had the Asian markets by the scruff of its neck. It still stands true about South Korea but then what about the rest? Xiaomi and Oppo are eating away the market Share in China and have now begun to do the same in developing markets such as India and Pakistan. They are even releasing their phones in the Middle East. Samsung was unique in making comparatively good, relatively cheap Android phones. Their only competitor was Apple who isn’t even on the same platform.
Oppo, Xiaomi have changed that.
Plus a number of local brands in every country have been able to chip away on the low and mid range phones.

Uninspiring Innovations

We haven’t heard anything new and groundbreaking since the time Samsung announced S4 with an Octa core processor. Yes the Galaxy Note Edge literally has an edge but then it’ll just be a niche device like the LG Flex.

Looks

Let’s be honest. If a person looks at a Samsung phone from a distance it would difficult for him to guess whether its an S5 or a A5 or Grand Prime or Ace or Note or Mega or …… you get the idea.
It is not unique. The last major design was when Apple decided to sue the hell out of Samsung.  It was such a redesign that the Android Police declared it to be designed by the lawyers.

But after that, they have gone with the same formula over and over again. It’s as if they firmly believe on the saying ‘don’t fix if it ain’t broken’. A handy reminder for them would be the debacle of Nokia.

Comparing itself with Apple

Samsung doesn’t need to be like Apple to sell phones. Apple owns a robust operating system. Samsung doesn’t. Yes there are plans for Tizen but things are moving too slowly in that direction.
On the other hand, Apple has always been successful due to its penetration in the home market, the US. Losses in other markets are completely offset by sales in the US market. Samsung on the other hand, doesn’t have that kind of a cushion.

Overall things are not at all looking good for Samsung. Even if they manage to release a good phone, they need to pray that Apple doesn’t release a better.
