Yesterday afternoon, Intel officially released a new series of Core X family processors at the Computex 2017 show. Intel said Core i9 processor contains up to 18 cores, mainly for gamers and high-performance demand.

Intel has announced a new series of “Core X” desktop processors at Computex. The new processors are more powerful versions of Core i5 and Core i7 models. The Core i9 line is intended for users who want a lot of firepower. The target audience for Core X platform is basically enthusiastic customers such as gamers and content creators. Intel is targeting gamers who want to play games at the best resolution possible and stream footage and chat at the same time. It is also good for people who create vlogs. The Core X-series has models with 4-cores starting at $1,999 Core i9 Extreme, which is the first consumer desktop processor that has 18-cores and 36-threads. The Core X family begins with the Core i5-7640X, priced at $242. It has 4-cores and 4-threads. The Core i7 X-series cost $339 for 4-core / 8-thread model and $599 for 8-core / 16-thread chip. Four models will be offered for the Core i9. The prices will start at $999 for a 10-core/20-thread processor and $1,6999 for a 16-core/32-thread chip. The desktop Core X processors have been made to work with Intel’s X299 motherboard chipset. It will also roll out on partner products soon. If you talk about the chip architecture, nearly all the Core X series is made on the latest version of Intel’s 6th generation Skylake platform, which is also known as Skylake X. 2 4-core models have been built on Kaby Lake X. Intel is also going to upgrade Turbo Boost technology on select higher-end models in the Core X series. It will be called Turbo Bost Max 3.0. The extra cores on the Core X models will enhance multitasking performance. Turbo Boost Max 3.0 will make sure that all cores get improved performance. Intel says that Core X series is 10% faster in terms of multithread performance when compared to previous generations, and 15% faster in terms of a single thread. The latest multicore models also show that Intel is serious about the competition with AMD. AMD recently released Ryzen processors that can be said to be the first competitors for Intel’s Core series. AMD has plans to launch its own Ryzen line which is also called Threadripper. AMD is planning to launch the series with 16 cores and 32 threads later this year. The 18-core i9 will give it some serious competition. Apart from the Core X series, Intel has also given updates about the upcoming eight-generation series of mainstream Intel chips. These chips are apparently named Coffee Lake. Earlier reports said that it will have an improvement of 15% over the seventh-generation Kaby Lake series. Intel has now announsed that the performance will be even better than that. The rate might go up to 30%. The company has not said anything about when Coffee Lake chips will be available in computers.

Desktops and DIY kits that have Intel’s X299 motherboard chipset will be available soon, so you can build your own Core i9 rig. Intel has designed a new liquid cooling system, named TS13X which keeps these 140-watt TDP chips controlled. These will have to be bought separately at $100. The downside is that the series is insanely expensive. Apart from that, the chips are only for desktops at the moment.
