Intel Launches Gemini Lake Pentium And Celeron Chips

Dec 12, 2017 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

US semiconductor giant Intel has now officially kicked off the launch of its new Gemini Lake family SoCs, succeeding the “Braswell” series used primarily in budget laptops and occasionally compact desktops. As expected, there are initially six different chips, each sold as Intel Pentium Silver or Intel Celeron.

Intel promises that the new chips should score with respect to the predecessor models, each with slight performance gains. The production takes place on the 14-nanometer scale, whereby the power loss is officially indicated with six to ten watts. The new CPUs are dual and quad-core chips, which include a faster-integrated graphics unit and support for Gigabit WLAN modules.

Intel claims that the new processors can handle up to eight gigabytes of memory. Depending on the model, its graphics unit is the Intel UHD Graphics 600 or Intel UHD Graphics 605, which differ in each case from clock rates of 650 to 800 MHz and 12 or 18 graphics cores. In principle, up to three displays can be addressed and also 4K panels should be able to run at 60 Hertz.

The new “Gemini Lake” portfolio is divided into two parts, with a distinction between “Pentium Gold” and “Celeron”. The “top model” for use in mobile systems is the new Intel Pentium Silver N5000, which is a 64-bit four-core chip with a base clock of 1.1 GHz and a burst frequency of 2.7 GHz is. The chip has a power loss of six watts and comes with the 750 MHz Intel UHD Graphics 605 GPU therefore.

For desktops, the Intel Pentium Silver J5005 will be used, which also has four cores, but run slightly faster with 1.5 GHz base clock and 2.8 GHz burst frequency. Accordingly, the power consumption here rises to 10 watts, while the clock rate of the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 605 climbs to 800 MHz.

The equally new Intel Celeron N4000 and N4100 are also SoCs for mobile use. The N4000 has two cores that operate at a minimum of 1.1 GHz and accelerate to a maximum of 2.6 GHz. The Intel UHD Graphics 600 runs here with 650 MHz, which establishes the chip as the absolute base model. The N4100, on the other hand, has four 1.1 GHz cores that can accelerate up to 2.4 GHz. Intel is running the GPU at 700 megahertz a little faster, almost reaching the level of the Pentium Silver N5000.

The portfolio of “Gemini Lake” SoCs will be rounded off by two new Celeron chips for desktops. The Celeron J4005 is equipped with two cores that run at 2.0 gigahertz base clock and accelerate to a maximum of 2.7 GHz when needed. The TDP is 10 watts, with the Intel UHD Graphics 600 GPU running at 700 MHz.Add to that the Intel Celeron J4105, whose four x86 cores running at 1.5 GHz base clock and can optionally clock up to 2.5 GHz. Again, a 10-watt TDP is specified, but the GPU runs a bit faster at 750 MHz.

The new Intel “Gemini Lake” CPUs are now available in some freshly launched or upgraded notebooks and desktops, all of which are more likely to be at the lower end of the price scale.
