Huawei Mate 10 Lite: Not Overwhelmingly Good

Nov 10, 2017 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

The Lite version of Huawei Mate 10 is now available. Huawei Mate 10 Pro was a really good phone and liked by many. People have a lot of expectations from Huawei Mate 10 Lite now. It is the economical version of Mate 10 Pro. The price is very tempting and the price card looks good. The built quality and the 18:9 screen looks pretty good. Let’s see if Huawei Mate 10 Lite is worth it!

Huawei Mate 10 Lite looks like a fusion of other phones by Huawei. It seems as if many specifications have been remodeled. So, this phone by Huawei is a little different than its other Lite versions.

The SoC of Huawei Mate 10 Lite is a HiSilicon Kirin 659, with a 2,3 GHz octa-core CPU and a GPU Mali T830 MP2 which has been directly derived from the 650/655 of P8 Lite 2017, P9 Lite, and P10 Lite. It works together with 4 GB of RAM, which is type LPDDR3.

The internal memory of Huawei Mate 10 Lite is 64 GB. This is good for users who want to use the dual sim slots without needing to expand the microSD memory, which is expandable to 256 GB. The phone has the following sensors: brightness, magnetometer,  accelerometer, and proximity. On the top, there is a tiny LED notification LED too. It is so small that it is almost invisible. The fingerprint reader works well. It is on the back of the phone. It is quick too, You can also designate gesture re-consignment such as tapping to take pictures or answer, swiping to expand the notification panel, and swiping sideways to scroll the pictures. On the connectivity front, we have the LTE data transfer (Cat.6), Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, and A-GPS. FM radio is there too. Unfortunately, there is no NFC chip. Huawei Mate 10 Lite does not have a Type-C, but a micro USB 2.0 with OTG instead. Type-C would have been preferred.

The performance is ok, but nothing exceptional. Although the phone looks like high-end, do not expect the performance to be like that too! The phone works well when compared to other mid-range phones. Huawei Mate 10 Lite is also very responsive, but it does take some time to open really heavy applications and games. Opening heavy websites can take some moments too.

It is a dual sim phone. The management of dual sims is good and effective, although most people will be ok with just a 2G connectivity on the second slot. The reception of the phone is also good. The Wifi and Bluetooth also work well and there seems to be no problem.

The phone looks pretty good and quality is also great. The back shell is of aluminum and the display is 18:9 with reduced frames. It almost looks like a top of the range phone. It is well-finished and solid. The touch and feel are comparable to some very expensive phones. The design and materials are immaculate. In this price range, you cannot find better materials and design than this. But, at 156.2 x 75 x 7.5 mm and 164 grams, the phone is pretty big. It is also a little slippery. It is more of a phablet and aimed at people searching for a big screen.

The display of the phone is 5.9 inch LCD IPSwithh FHD and resolution. It is like FullHD but has a longer height to mask the 18:9 form factor. The display quality is good but nothing exceptional. The backlighting is decent, The colors are vivid but really emphasized and appear to be contagious when you tilt the phone and view it from a non-perpendicular angle. The brightness sensors work well so the readability is good even when you are outdoors. In short, the screen is good when compared to others in the same range.

The sound from the speakers is a little disappointing. It sounds a little slipshod on the bass. In terms of sound pressure, it is not that powerful. This is very unfortunate as the sound from the headphones is good. The speakers could have benefited from the same quality.

Huawei Mate 10 Lie has 4 cameras. So, the photography part is expected to be good. The main camera on the back is 16 MP and has an unstabilized F / 2.2 optic sensor. The front camera is 13 megapixels with F/20 optics. This is nothing exceptional, but in behind and front, there is a secondary 2 megapixels picture module which lets the system correctly detect the depth of a field and work on the post-production focus. This is just like the solution that was on HTC One M8 in 2014. Huawei has repeated it. This might be repeated again in 2018 by Huawei. Now, let’s talk about the results. The pictures shot from the 2 activated sensors and the bokeh effect that is simulated is pretty convincing. This is better than what could have been there with a single goal. The positive judgment and the cutout are always there on both the cameras. The image quality is also good. During daytime, the colors are smoother and the contrasts are more emphasized. But, if there are shadows, low light or noise, the quality deteriorates a bit. But, then again, you should not expect more in this price range! Selfies are more convincing than pictures. But, if the light is little they suffer too. However, they are still the best in this price range. The portrait mode also gets you decent pictures. The lack of back sensor is compensated for by the software processing. This gives you great shots. The lack of optical stabilization have impacted the video quality and the software can’t do much about it.

With a 3340 MAh battery, you can use the phone the whole day. With constant use, you can use Huawei Mate 10 Lite for 5 to 6 hours. Obviously, the results can vary with your use. SO, the autonomy is good but some phones in the same price range have more to offer.

The phone has EMUI 5.1 based Android Nougat (7.0). The security patches were updated in September 2017. The phone will get an update to Android 8.0 Oreo but it is not known when this will happen. EMUI is amongst the best Android customizations. It allows users to do graphics manipulation. It is also good in terms of privacy and security. There are many options for energy saving and a lot of options with gestures. There are also many preinstalled apps. Basically, the software looks promising.

The Huawei Mate 10 Lite is available for 406 USD. The phone looks spectacular. The touch and feel of the phone are is comparable to high-level phones. However, the phone does have its defects. The user experience is also pretty mediocre. But, the price quality ratio is good. It is similar to Huawei P10 Lite which is cheaper. The cameras are decent but not exceptional. The autonomy, performance and technical endowment are all good. In short, this a good phone in the mid-range. Maybe, if the price falls a little, this phone will be more enticing.

Overall, this is a good phone by Huawei. The user experience is amazing. The battery, software, hardware, display, and materials are good. The audio department could have been better. The price quality ratio is good but would be ideal if the price falls a little.
