Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook and its cofounder Mark Zukerberg came under fire after the snowballing effect of the confirmation of the news of the data breach of millions of Facebook users. Facebook, in fact all the social media sites run on the data that the users are sharing and providing about their personal lives, professions and opinions. They strictly operate on the principal of data and information security. When you manage your privacy settings, you want surety that the data you reveal about yourself is visible to only the people you want to show it to. However a whistle blower shattered people’s perception about Facebook data security when it became known that the data was breached before the election and it helped in Preident Trump’s election campaign.

Mark Zuckerberg has finally broken the silence on the matter after about 48 hours and apologized to the public. He has ensured that since 2014 (year when the breach occurred) Facebook has greatly improved its security measures. In a televised interview on CNN he said he is really sorry for the “breach of trust” that the Facebook users have in his web application. He further said

“This was a major breach of trust and I’m really sorry that this happened,” he said. “We have a basic responsibility to protect people’s data. And if we can’t do that, then we don’t deserve to have the opportunity to serve people. So our responsibility now is to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.”

When asked does he think Facebook had a role to play in the outcome of the election, he was not clear and his confusion seemed honest. He said they are going to investigate and start with the thousand of apps that are using the Facebook platform and have an access to the Facebook data.

We really hope such breach of privacy and trust never happens again. What do you think should happen as a consequence of this scandal? Let us know by commenting below.
