Apple Is Forging A 5G Alliance With Intel Against Qualcomm

Nov 18, 2017 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Apple is apparently working to make itself far more independent of the chip manufacturer Qualcomm than before.Especially with the radio modem there is a lot to do.They are now working directly with Intel to get chips that better meet the needs of Apple developers.

Apple Intel Alliance

Qualcomm is ahead of the pack in mobile modems in terms of both market share and technology. But Apple does not want to buy more from the manufacturer. Accordingly, you have to make sure that in Cupertino there are noteworthy alternatives, especially in the coming 5G chips, which are available in sufficient quantities on time. And you do that now with Intel, as the US magazine Ars Technica reports.

However, one does not necessarily have to initiate a development from scratch. At Intel, there are already prototypes – even if they do not have the state of Qualcomm chips. The group has also several thousand employees who are working on 5G modems.Whether these will ultimately reach the feature scope of the competition, is still unclear, because various specifications that can be found at Qualcomm are ultimately not supported by the network operators anyway anyway.

Because the iPhone users are the most lucrative customers for most network operators and accordingly, the mobile service providers are also a bit far from the wishes that come from Cupertino. Accordingly, Apple is an important link to the network operators for Intel.  In all likelihood, the first iPhone with 5G support will hit the market in 2019 or 2020.This will probably support at least in theory bandwidths in the gigabit range. However, such speeds are probably not yet provided by the mobile operators.
