The Volvo Group is a Swedish multinational manufacturing company with its headquarters in Gothenburg. Its main activity is producing, distributing and selling trucks, buses and construction equipment. Volvo also supplies industrial drive systems and marine and financial services.

Electric Cars

An electric car is an automobile that is run by one or more electric motors, using electrical energy stored in rechargeable batteries or another storage device. Electric motors provide them instant torque. They are around 3 times more efficient than cars with an internal combustion engine. The first practical electric cars were made in the 1880s.

Advantage Of Electric Cars

  1. No Gas:Electric cars are charged by electricity, so you don’t need to buy gas. Driving fuel based cars can be expensive as price of fuel have gone all time high. With electric vehicles, this cost can be avoided. An electric car is far cheaper to run.
  2. Save:Electric cars can be fuelled for low prices, and some new cars will offer incentives to get money back from the government for going green.
  3. No Emissions:They are 100 percent eco-friendly because they run on electrically powered engines. They don’t give out toxic gases or smoke in the environment as they run on clean energy source. You’ll contribute to a green climate.
  4. Popularity: EV’s are rising in popularity. So you will have a lot of choices.
  5. Safe to Drive: In case of an accident, you can expect airbags to open and electricity supply to cut from battery. This can prevent you from injuries.
  6. Cost Effective:With technological advancements, cost and maintenance have gone down. The mass production of batteries and tax incentives has brought down the cost further.
  7. Low Maintenance:They run on electrically powered engines and so there is no need to grease the engines. So the maintenance cost of these cars has come down.
  8. Reduced Noise Pollution:Electric cars are much quieter.

Volvo’s First Electric Car

Volvo Car USA CEO Lex Kerssemakers has found a way to enter the US market. Volvo will make public its first battery-electric car in 2019. The range is expected to drift around 250 miles, and it would be between $35,000 and $40,000.Volvo has two different platforms it can take advantage of for the appearance. The SPA platform is used for the new XC90, V90, S90 and XC60. It will also probably highlight a future S60 and probably a V60, too. The smaller CMA platform will appear with the XC40 compact crossover next year, which is also an alternative.

Volvo is also thinking whether or not to build its EV as a standalone model. Price and range are two very important and necessary components to entering into the US EV market. Tesla’s market share is currently limited by high prices. Smaller, affordable EVs like the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf are in a weak position because of their low overall range.

$40,000 is above the US average for a new vehicle purchase price, federal tax incentives can decrease around $7,500 off the price. Those motivations are limited for each automaker, so if Volvo sells more than a certain amount, the incentive will be phased out. But right now those incentives are helping to increase the potential market share for EVs. The US is a unique market. Long trips and commutes are common. Charging rates can  replenish battery life in  a matter of hour. Stopovers can add hours to drive times.

Tesla is dominates the electric car market. Some automakers, like Chevy andBolt, are planning to release competitors soon.  Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3 will cost around  $35,000 . Bolt also sells for roughly the same price tag with a 238-mile range. It’s still unclear what shape the car will take. Chevy and Telsa both  have opted for a smaller,  compact car design for their debut EVs. Volvo is famous in the US for SUVs and crossovers.

Electric cars can be the future if charging ports are easily available and do not take long. Longer charging periods with scarce charging ports will create problem for people travelling in electric cars. US is a good place for Volvo to explore the market for these cars. If they prove to be a hit there, they can be introduced in more countries.
